Spiral Jetty
Artist: Robert Smithson
What:
Robert Smithson's monumental earthwork Spiral Jetty (1970) is located on the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Using black basalt rocks and earth from the site, the artist created a coil 1500 feet long and 15 feet wide that stretches out counterclockwise into the lake
So What:
· The art piece has collected anaerobic water which has accelerated the growth of pink algae
· The art piece can be seen and experienced based on the water level of the lake. If the water level is high, the piece is not as visible.
· The calcium and salt deposits that are left on the black basalt are drumlins of the receding waters
