Time Landscape
Artist: Alan Sonfist
What:
"Time Landscape of New York City", is a land art installation located in Greenwich Village. In an essay published in 1968 titled Natural Phenomena as Public Monuments, Sonfist emancipated public art from focusing exclusively on human history stating: "As in war monuments that record the life and death of soldiers, the life and death of natural phenomena such as rivers, springs, and natural outcroppings need to be remembered. Public art can be a reminder that the city was once a forest or a marsh." Time Landscape is a restoration of the once indigenous landscape in Greenwich Village prior to European migration.
So What:
It heightens awareness of the historical geology or terrain of a place
It is timeless. It has been growing and changing since the installation in 1965
It has ecological and educational value and brings nature into a very urban setting
It has evolved into a larger program for which the City is planning to complete more Time Landscapes throughout various neighborhoods
