Time to calm the water

I am interested in understanding the natural time that water takes from becoming a wake (all sizes) to becoming calm again. A wake can be made from wind, an animal, human, anything hitting or entering the water. When water is calm it is a mirror, when there is a wake it is busy. Sometimes realizing art takes time. How can water that is calm or in wake be used to communicate?
